Musings of a Teacher

A day in the life of a teacher can turn to mush unless we share and reflect, have a sense of humor about it and, most importantly, revel in it! Thus, this is a space to revel in my fullfillments as a teacher and the accomplishments of my students; and to share and reflect on lessons and teachable moments. I hope to inspire others a bit at a time and to have a space where I can peek back on my musings as reminders of why I do what I do...because there are so many reasons...

Happy Mother's Day

Looking suitable for Mothers!

Happy Mother's Day! Thank you for sharing your children with me. I enjoy working with each and every one of the kiddos in class. Each child brings something unique and special to my daily life.

When I was describing some ways the children could honor moms on Mother's Day, one student said, "I'd really love to teach my mommy some of our songs. I think that would make her the happiest". I've been doing lots of singing with the children these days, it manages to calm our bodies and minds. The class picked out some favorites to share with you.

So without further a-do, I present your kindergartners, singing from the bottom of their hearts, in your honor on Mother's Day:

This first song is one of my favorites from childhood, a song my mother taught me!

Teaching Philosophy

Teachers are guides and facilitators who aid in the child's self-construction. My classroom is student-centered, meaning instruction is differentiated to cater to each child's educational needs and interests. In my classroom, individual and group work is encouraged. Learning occurs in an inquiring, cooperative, nurturing atmosphere. As a teacher I model, direct, and stimulate enthusiasm for learning.

A child's physical, emotional, social, aesthetic, spiritual, and cognitive needs and interests are interdependent and equally vital. I recognize that students learn in a variety of ways and I enjoy creating lessons and materials for children to work with that helps them experience concepts being taught.

I also incorporate a social curriculum in my class to encourage children to engage in a safe, kind and respectful manner.
