Four Winds: Plant & Animal Defenses

This Four Winds presentation was SO MUCH FUN! We learned about animal and plant defenses. We even had the opportunity to touch and feel some examples of how plants and animals defend themselves. For example, we discovered that sea shells are where certain animals live and the shells are hard and sometimes spiky in order to protect the creature living inside. Some plants have sharp pieces, like thorns, to keep animals from eating it; other plants might smell bad. Many frogs taste bad, which makes predators spit the frog out quickly. A worms defense: it's slimy, which makes it tricky for predators to hold onto!

The first activity involved matching animals and plants according to a certain defense:

A bee, a wasp and a scorpion all have stingers!

Camouflage is a terrific defense!

Turtles have a shell that serve as a protective armor!

HUGE eyes help these animals see all around them and also serve to intimidate potential predators.

What in the world does a buck and a cactus have in common? Spikes!!!

As a cumulative activity for all the defenses we learned about, children were invited to use their imaginations to create their very own creature with a system of self defenses. How FUN!

"Half bee, half T-Rex". I can't imagine anything messing with a huge bee with a stinger AND razor sharp teeth.

Not only can this chameleon change colors...it also has a stinger, sharp claws, and a "stink" to ward off predators
