Fishing for Sight Words is a really fun way for students to practice reading sight words AND strengthen fine motor skills.
The children set out the sight word fish pile in the floor (in an orderly fashion). The "fishing rod" needs to be unwound in order to reach the floor. There is a magnet at the end of the rope which will "hook" a paper clip attached to one of the fish. In order to reel the sight word fish up, student then has to use his fingers to wind the rope back around the rod. Finally, the student reads the sight word he has caught!
Students who can use a bit more of a challenge are asked to use that sight word in a sentence, which he can dictate to a fellow player, or write down on writing paper.
The rope is being lowered down, and a sight word fish has been caught! |
The fish is being reeled in... |
